According to Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS), the epidemic of HIV infection in Ukraine is the second largest among the countries of Eastern Europe and Central Asia. Ukraine continues to work in search of new resources and tools on the "way to accelerate the fight against AIDS". Despite the challenges and risks facing the country in the face of financial and military crises, the state, healthcare system and society are paying a lot of attention to HIV / AIDS problem.
Based on the results of the annual reporting on HIV surveillance, the statistical indicators have been updated. For the period 1987 - 2017, the country officially registered 315,618 cases of this disease among Ukrainian citizens, including 102,205 AIDS cases and 45074 deaths from AIDS-related illnesses.
According to estimates, in Ukraine at the beginning of 2018, there were 241,000 people living with HIV of all ages. The prevalence of HIV in the age group of 15-49 years was 0.98%.
As of 01.01.2018, there were 141 371 HIV-infected persons under medical supervision, including one in three have a diagnos of AIDS.
Territorial spread of HIV infection is not uniform. The most intensively epidemic process of this disease takes place in the southern regions of Ukraine, in the territory of Dnipropetrovsk, Kyiv, Chernihiv and Donetsk regions, where the highest rates of HIV prevalence are recorded. In the western provinces of the country, the levels of HIV infection prevalence are the lowest. More than half of the patients, who are officially under medical supervision, live in the territories of Dnipropetrovsk, Donetsk, Odessa regions and Kyiv.
In 2017, the number of newly registered HIV-infected persons increased in Ukraine - 18 194 against 17 066 in 2016, the rate of growth was + 7%, the rate of morbidity was 42.8 per 100 100 thousand population versus 40.0 in the previous year. Significant growth rates of morbidity are registered in Dnipropetrovsk, Kirovograd, Odessa, Khmelnytsky, and Chernihiv oblasts.
The increase in the number of newly registered patients in more than 1,000 patients was due to the involvement of people with positive results of HIV testing in previous years and the revitalization of the work of the Donetsk and Luhansk regional AIDS centers in the medical surveillance.
Among people who became infected with HIV, 58.7% were men, 41.3% were women, 74.5% were urban residents, 25.5% were villagers.
HIV infection continues to spread among the general population at the expense of the sexual transmission pathway, retains the activity of the parenteral route of transmission when injected into narcotic drugs.
According to the strategy "Accelerated overcoming of the HIV epidemic", aimed at eradicating the epidemic until 2030, as a threat to public health, in order to ensure healthy life and well-being of all people, Ukraine needs to simultaneously implement a series of measures aimed at active detection of undiagnosed HIV infection, adherence to the continuous chain of provision of HIV services, intensive development of ART and effective treatment. It will provide an opportunity to live a life full of life of people living with HIV, stop the HIV / AIDS epidemic in the country, prevent new HIV infections and reduce the mortality of people from AIDS-related illnesses.
